As the legend goes, the first seed of the San Marzano tomato came to Campania in 1770 as a gift from Peru.  The tomatoes come from a small town of the same name near Naples and were first grown in the volcanic soil in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius.  The volcanic soild is belived to make the difference acting as filter for water impurities.
